Iso-octyl alcohol is a colourless, transparent flammable liquid with a peculiar odour. It is soluble in about 720 times water and miscible with most organic solvents. 2-Ethyl-1-hexanol has the danger of causing combustion when exposed to high heat, open flames or in contact with oxidising agents. It can accumulate static electricity and ignite its vapour.

Uses
- Plasticiser production: Iso-octyl alcohol is the main raw material for the production of plasticisers such as dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP).
- Coatings and adhesives: Used in the manufacture of octyl acrylate, which in turn is used in coatings and adhesives production.
- Other fields: Iso-octyl alcohol can be used as defoamer of white latex, mixed solvent component of nitro spray paint, and also used in paper sizing, photographic, latex and printing and dyeing industries, and also used as edible flavouring in baked food, frozen dairy products and pudding.
