Toluene is a clear, colorless liquid with a distinctive smell. It occurs naturally in crude oil and in the tolu tree. It is also produced in the process of making gasoline and other fuels from crude oil and making coke from coal. Methylbenzene is used in making paints, paint thinners, fingernail polish, lacquers, adhesives, and rubber and in some printing and leather tanning processes.

Uses
- Solvent: Toluene is an excellent organic solvent with good solubility and volatility, which can dissolve many organic compounds, such as resin, rubber, paint, ink, etc.
- Chemical raw material: it is an important raw material for synthesising many kinds of organic compounds.
- Aviation fuel additive: Toluene can increase the octane number of aviation fuel and improve the anti-detonation performance of fuel, so it is used as an additive for aviation fuel.
