What is Methyl tert-butyl ether CAS 1634-04-4?
Methyl tert-butyl ether is a colourless, transparent and volatile liquid at room temperature and pressure, with a smell similar to gasoline.It is slightly soluble in water and miscible with many organic solvents such as alcohols, ethers and hydrocarbons.It is relatively stable chemically and not easy to have chemical reactions, but it can be oxidised under the action of strong oxidising agents, and the ether bond breaking reaction can occur in the presence of acidic catalysts.
Applications：
- Gasoline Additive: The most important use is as a gasoline additive. Methyl tert-butyl ether can significantly increase the octane number of gasoline, enhance the anti-detonation performance of gasoline, and improve fuel efficiency.
- Raw material for organic synthesis: Methyl tert-butyl ether is an important raw material for synthesising other organic compounds. In the chemical industry, high purity isobutene can be prepared by MTBE cracking.
- Solvent: In the paint and ink industry, MTBE can dissolve resins, pigments and other components to improve the coating performance and drying speed of products; in some chemical reactions, it can also be used as a reaction medium to promote the reaction.
