Chemical structure:
- Sulbactam is a semi-synthetic beta-lactam compound that is structurally similar to penicillin, but its action is primarily to inhibit beta-lactamase rather than directly inhibit bacterial growth.
Mechanism of action:
- Many bacteria are able to produce beta-lactam enzymes that hydrolyze the beta-lactam ring of beta-lactam antibiotics, rendering these antibiotics inactive. Sulbactam sodium protects antibiotics from enzyme destruction by irreversibly binding to and inhibiting these enzymes.
Application
Enhanced antibacterial potency:
- Sulbactam sodium inhibits beta-lactamase produced by bacteria and protects antibiotics from hydrolysis, thus enhancing antibacterial effectiveness. This makes bacteria that would otherwise be resistant to certain antibiotics sensitive.
Expand antibacterial spectrum:
- By combining with beta-lactam antibiotics, sulbactam sodium is able to expand the antibacterial spectrum of these antibiotics, making it effective against a wider variety of bacteria, including some resistant strains.
To treat complex infections:
