Sodium formate is the simplest organic carboxylate in the form of white crystals or powder with a slight formic acid odor. It is slightly deliquescent and hygroscopic. It is soluble in about 1.3 times water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol and pentanol, and insoluble in ether. Its aqueous solution is alkaline. When heated, sodium formate decomposes into hydrogen and sodium oxalate, and then forms sodium carbonate.
