What Is Octanol?
Octanol is a colourless alcohol with a molecular formula of C8H18O, consisting of eighteen hydrogens and eight carbon atoms. It is commonly used as a solvent and for the preparation of plasticizers and antifoaming agents. Its hydrophobic properties, with a similar carbon to oxygen ratio as lipids (8:1), make it useful in various applications.
Does octanol mix with water?
Octanol is insoluble in water.
The hydroxyl group in octanol makes it somewhat polar, but the long hydrocarbon chain dominates its molecular properties, making it more non - polar overall. As a result, it has limited solubility in water, which is a polar solvent. At room temperature, only a small amount of octanol can dissolve in water, and the solubility increases slightly with increasing temperature.
