2-Ethylhexanol 2-EH Chemical is produced industrially via a three-step process from propylene:
- Dimerization: Two molecules of propylene are combined to form n-butyraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde (via hydroformylation or "oxo" synthesis).
- Aldol Condensation: n-Butyraldehyde undergoes an aldol condensation in the presence of a base catalyst to form 2-ethylhexenal.
- Hydrogenation: The 2-ethylhexenal is then hydrogenated (with H₂) over a metal catalyst to yield 2-ethylhexanol.
