How is benzoic acid produced industrially?
In industry, benzoic acid is commonly prepared using toluene, o-xylene or naphthalene as raw materials. These raw materials can be obtained from coal tar or petroleum. Additionally, benzoic acid can be produced alongside benzaldehyde when toluene is processed. Industrial methods of producing benzoic acid include toluene chlorination, phthalic acid desorption, toluene liquid-phase air oxidation carboxylation, hypobenzyl trichloro hydrolysation, and phthalic anhydride decarboxylation. However, the final product obtained by decarboxylating phthalic anhydride is difficult to refine and expensive to produce. It is only used in small batches for the manufacturing of medicines and other products. Toluene chlorination products are not suitable for use in food. Benzoic acid has different specifications for industrial, food and pharmaceutical use. Food-grade benzoic acid must comply with GB1901-80: the content must be above 99.5%, the melting point must be 121–123 °C, and the quality indicators, such as easy oxides, easy carbides, chlorine-containing compounds, burning residue, heavy metals and arsenic content, must be within the stipulated limits.
