Due to its good ignition quality, with a high cetane number, Dimethyl Ether DME can be used in diesel engines as a substitute for conventional diesel fuel. However, compared to diesel fuel DME has a lower viscosity (insufficient), and poor lubricity. Like LPG for gasoline engines, DME is stored in the liquid state under relatively low pressure of 0.5 MPa.
How is dimethyl ether DME for transportation fuel produced?
Dimethyl ether (DME) can be produced as a transportation fuel by several methods. The two main production routes are from syngas and from methanol.
Syngas Production: The process begins with the production of syngas, a mixture of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. Syngas can be produced from a variety of feedstocks. In this process, natural gas (primarily methane) reacts with steam over a catalyst at high temperatures and pressures to produce syngas. Coal can also be used to produce syngas by gasification, where coal is reacted with oxygen and steam in a gasifier to produce a mixture of C0, CO2, and H2.
DME Synthesis: The syngas is then converted to DME through a two - step process. First, the syngas is converted to methanol over a suitable catalyst, such as a mixture of copper, zinc oxide, and alumina. This reaction is typically carried out at moderate temperatures and pressures.
