Dichloromethane is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH2Cl2. Also known as methylene chloride.
Methylene Chloride is a colorless transparent liquid with an irritating smell similar to ether. It is slightly soluble in water, ethanol and ether. It is a nonflammable solvent with low boiling point under normal service conditions. When its vapor becomes high concentration in high-temperature air, it will generate a mixture of gas with weak combustion. CH2Cl2 dichloromethane is often used to replace flammable petroleum ether, ether, etc.
How is Methylene Chloride produced?
Methylene chloride was first prepared by Henri Victor Regnault who isolated a mixture of chloromethane and chlorine that had been exposed to sunlight. It is now commercially produced by treating either methyl chloride or methane at elevated temperatures of over 400° C. These products then undergo a progressive chlorination which produces a mixture of by-products which are further separated out via distillation to produce methylene chloride.
