How is para-xylene chemical liquid produced?

Oct 14, 2025 Leave a message

CAS 106-42-3 Para-xylene (p-xylene) is a colorless, flammable liquid with a distinct aromatic odor, belonging to the xylene isomer family (alongside ortho-xylene and meta-xylene). Key physical characteristics of para-xylene liquid include a density of 0.857 g/cm³ (25°C), a melting point of 13.3°C (meaning it solidifies only in cool environments) and a boiling point of 138.4°C (allowing it to vaporize when heated). It is insoluble in water but highly miscible with common organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, chloroform, benzene, and acetone, making it useful in dissolution processes.

How is para-xylene produced?

The production of p-xylene is industrially significant, with annual demand estimated at 37 million tons in 2014, and still on the increase. Para-xylene is produced by catalytic reforming of petroleum naphtha as part of the BTX aromatics (benzene, toluene and the xylene isomers) extracted from the catalytic reformate. The p-xylene liquid is then separated out in a series of distillation, adsorption or crystallization and reaction processes from the m-xylene, o-xylene, and ethylbenzene.
