It is the main feedstock in the manufacture of terephthalic acid (PTA), the basic ingredient of PET. Para-xylene (P-Xylene) is produced through a multi-step process from petroleum:
Feedstock processing
Crude oil-derived naphtha is fed into a catalytic reformer to generate reformate, which is a BTX-rich aromatic mixture containing benzene, toluene and xylenes.
Stream separation: the C8 aromatic fraction (mixed xylenes: o-, m- and p-xylene, plus ethylbenzene) is isolated from the reformate or the pyrolysis gasoline from the ethylene by-product.
Isomer separation (core step): simple distillation fails due to the narrow boiling point gaps of the isomers. Commercial separation relies mainly on:
Selective adsorption (e.g. the UOP Parex™ process): Molecular sieves selectively capture p-xylene.
Crystallisation: Leverages p-xylene's higher freezing point for separation.
Isomerisation: P-xylene-depleted raffinate is routed to an isomerisation unit to rebalance the isomer equilibrium and boost the overall p-xylene yield.
