Reppe Process:
Step 1: Acetylene reacts with two molecules of formaldehyde to form 1,4-butynediol.
Step 2: The 1,4-butynediol is then hydrogenated to form 1,4-butanediol.
Step 3: Finally, 1,4-butanediol is dehydrated (water is removed) to form Tetrahydrofuran.
Maleic Anhydride Route:
Another significant method involves the hydrogenation of maleic anhydride. Maleic anhydride, derived from the oxidation of benzene or butane, is converted to THF in a single-step catalytic process.
Oxidation of n-Butane:
A modern and increasingly important method is the direct oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride, which is then hydrogenated to THF, as mentioned above.
