How to check purity of ethylene glycol?
Gas Chromatography (GC)
The main way to check purity and measure impurities (e.g., diethylene glycol must be less than 0.1% for industrial use and less than 10 ppm for USP standards). GC, often paired with a flame ionization detector (FID), is very sensitive.
UV Transmittance
Checks the quality of monoethylene glycol (MEG) by measuring light passing through it at 220nm, 240nm, 275nm, and 350nm. Higher light transmittance means higher purity.
Check Physical Properties
- Density: Should be 1.115 g/cm³ at 20°C.
- Appearance: Clear, colorless, and free of particles.
- Freezing Point: Test a mixture (e.g., a 50:50 water/MEG mix should freeze at -37°C) to confirm the correct concentration.
