It is a colorless, practically odorless, and hygroscopic liquid with a sweetish taste. DEG is miscible in water, alcohol, ether, acetone, and ethylene glycol.[3] DEG is a widely used solvent. Diethylene glycol is used in the manufacture of saturated and unsaturated polyester resins, polyurethanes, and plasticizers. It is a solvent for nitrocellulose, resins, dyes, oils, and other organic compounds.
Is DEG Diethylene glycol safe for skin?
Diethylene glycol (DEG) is generally unsuitable for use on the skin, especially in cosmetics or skin care products where the risk is high.
DEG is an industrial chemical (e.g. solvent, antifreeze) and is not approved for use in cosmetics. Prolonged skin contact or contact with broken skin may be absorbed, damaging the kidneys, liver and nervous system, and even small amounts may be harmful to sensitive people. It may exist as an impurity in glycerin, polyethylene glycols (PEGs) and other ingredients, and if the production process is not up to standard, it is easy to be mixed into the product with raw materials, increasing the safety risk.
