CAS 127-19-5 N,N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAC) is completely miscible with water, forming a colorless, high-boiling-point polar non-protonic solvent with a faint ammonia-like odor. This highly versatile substance dissolves a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds and is compatible with most alcohols, ethers, esters, ketones, and aromatic compounds.
Regarding solubility, it mixes thoroughly with water in any proportion. It is also highly miscible with most common organic solvents such as alcohols, ethers, esters, benzene, chloroform, and ketones, exhibiting only limited solubility in aliphatic hydrocarbons. As a solvent, it effectively dissolves polymers like polyacrylonitrile and polyurethane.
Regarding stability and compatibility, DMAc remains stable under safe storage conditions. Caution is required as it reacts violently with oxidizing agents. Mixing with halogenated compounds like carbon tetrachloride or hexachlorocyclohexane poses safety risks, which intensify when heated above 90°C. Iron powder catalyzes the reaction between DMAc and halogenated compounds, with the reaction initiation temperature as low as 71°C.
DMAc finds extensive industrial applications, commonly used in the production of fibers and coatings, and also serves as a raw material for preparing pharmaceutical excipients.
