Vinyl acetate is toxic to humans.
Acute toxicity:
- Irritant to eyes, skin and respiratory tract
- Coughing, sore throat and dizziness (narcotic effect at high doses) from inhalation
Chronic toxicity:
- Dermatitis and persistent respiratory issues from prolonged or repeated exposure
Carcinogenicity:
- Classified as Group 2B by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) due to sufficient evidence of cancer in animal studies (e.g. nasal tumours in rats) and limited evidence in humans
Important note:
- The toxic hazard is primarily associated with exposure to the monomer (liquid or vapour)
- The finished polymers (e.g. PVA glue) are typically non-toxic and safe once the monomer has fully reacted and cured

1. Vinyl acetate is a flammable liquid and should be kept away from open flames and high temperatures.
2. Adequate ventilation is required in the working environment.
