Flammability Hazard
Paraxylene is a highly flammable liquid and vapor. Its vapor is heavier than air and can spread to ignition sources, causing flashback and increasing the risk of fire and explosion.
Acute Health Hazards
Inhalation of p-xylene may cause dizziness, headache, drowsiness, nausea, and irritation of the nose and throat. High-concentration exposure may cause confusion, loss of coordination, coma, or death. Skin or eye contact can result in irritation, redness, and pain, potentially leading to dermatitis and severe eye damage. Ingestion may irritate the gastrointestinal tract, causing nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. More critically, swallowing paraxylene can be life-threatening-the substance may enter the respiratory tract and cause fatal pulmonary lesions.
Chronic Health and Reactivity Hazards
Long-term, repeated exposure to xylene damages liver, kidney, and bone marrow function and is suspected of potentially affecting fertility or harming fetal development. Additionally, xylene is reactive and can undergo hazardous reactions when exposed to strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, or high temperatures.
