It is an organic compound mainly used as a solvent. 2-Methoxyethanol is a clear, colourless liquid with an ether-like odour. It belongs to a class of solvents known as glycol ethers, which are notable for their ability to dissolve a variety of chemical compounds and their miscibility with water and other solvents. It can be formed by nucleophilic attack of methanol on protonated oxirane, followed by proton transfer.

2-Methoxyethanol is widely used in coatings. With a relative evaporation rate of ~0.5 (vs. n-butyl acetate = 1.0), it helps formulate varnishes, enamels, stains and paint removers. Its controlled drying supports protective coatings like lacquers, metal coatings, baking enamels, phenolic varnishes and epoxy resin coatings.
Dyes & Resins Applications
2-Methoxyethanol solvent effectively dissolves nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, natural/synthetic resins, alcohol-soluble dyes, ethyl cellulose and inks. This makes it ideal for printing inks, leather dyeing and cellophane sealing, thanks to its strong solvency for polar/non-polar materials (oils, pigments included).
As a Coupling Agent
Fully miscible with water and most organic solvents (alcohols, ethers, acetone, hydrocarbons, ketones, glycols), it acts as a coupling agent in water-organic mixtures. It ensures stable formulations for spray paints and quick-drying varnishes without phase separation.
