Key roles in nylon production
For nylon-6, cyclohexanone is first converted into cyclohexanone oxime, the crucial precursor of caprolactam. Caprolactam is the direct monomer used in the production of nylon-6, and around 70% of the world's caprolactam production relies on cyclohexanone chemical as the base material.
For nylon-66, cyclohexanone undergoes oxidation to generate adipic acid. When adipic acid mixes with hexamethylenediamine (HMDA), nylon-6,6 is formed.
As part of the KA oil process, it is produced alongside cyclohexanol to form a blend known as KA oil (ketone-alcohol oil). This oil can be oxidised to produce the adipic acid required for nylon-6,6 production.
In short, cyclohexanone-derived precursors form the basis of polyamide chains in both nylon-6 and nylon-6,6. These two types of nylon are used to make a wide range of products, including fishing lines, garments and auto components.
