m-Xylene has the following main uses:

First, it is used as a raw material for isomerization to produce p-xylene and o-xylene; second, it is used as a solvent or component in blended gasoline; and third, it is used in the production of resins and fine chemical products. The following focuses on the applications of m-xylene in resins and fine chemical products.

 

1. As a modifying intermediate for resin materials

  • m-xylene can be used to produce isophthalic acid through a liquid-phase oxidation reaction. Isophthalic acid is used to produce unsaturated polyester resins, which can be used in construction, transportation, and other fields.
  • m-xylene can be oxidized and then reacted with phosgene to produce isophthaloyl chloride. Poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) resin, synthesized from isophthaloyl chloride and m-phenylenediamine, can be used to make fibers, films, and coatings.
  • m-Dimethylbenzaldehyde can be synthesized from m-xylene by reacting it with carbon monoxide, and then oxidized and dehydrated to obtain trimellitic anhydride. Trimericic anhydride is an important raw material for the development of new materials.

 

2. Used as an intermediate in fine chemical raw materials such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and dyes.

Meta-xylene can be oxidized with ammonia to produce isophthalonitrile, an intermediate raw material for the highly effective, broad-spectrum, low-toxicity, and low-residue fungicide "chlorothalonil." It is also an intermediate in the production of guanidine resins and m-phenylenediamine, and is used in the production of epoxy resin curing agents.
