CAS 106-42-3 Para-xylene (PX) also known as p-xylene is a colorless, transparent liquid with an aromatic odor. Its molecular formula is C8H10, and the two methyl groups in its molecular structure are located at the para position of the benzene ring. p-Xylene has a boiling point of 138.4℃, a melting point of 13.2℃, and a density of 0.861 g/cm³. It is sparingly soluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents, such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and benzene.

What is para-xylene (PX) used for?
The overwhelming primary use (>99%) of para-xylene is as a chemical intermediate to produce:
Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) or Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT). These are then polymerized to produce Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET).
PET is the plastic used for:
- Synthetic fibers (polyester for clothing, textiles).
- Packaging (plastic bottles for beverages, food containers).
- Films and resins.
A minuscule fraction may be used as a specialty solvent or in laboratory research.
