It has a sweet taste. It is one of the simplest diols. Its chemical formula is C₂H₆O₂. MEG can be mixed with water in any proportion. Chemical MEG is one of the basic raw materials in the chemical fibre industry. It is often used as a solvent, an antifreeze, and a PETE material.

Polyester industry:
PET resins: MEG (monoethylene glycol) is a primary raw material for PET (polyethylene terephthalate) production. Over 60% of global MEG output is consumed in PET manufacturing.
Polyester fibres: These are used to produce polyester staple fibres and filaments, which are widely used in clothing, home textiles and industrial fabrics.
Antifreeze & Coolant:
Chemical MEG is formulated into automotive and industrial antifreezes and coolants, lowering the freezing point of water and raising the boiling point to prevent engine or equipment damage from freezing in winter and overheating in summer.
Chemical synthesis:
Monoethylene Glycol (CAS 107-21-1) is used in producing diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol and other glycol ethers.
Other applications:
In the paper industry as a softening agent to improve flexibility; in leather processing as a humectant to prevent cracking; and in hydraulic fluids and de-icing agents.
