CAS 75-09-2 Dichloromethane (DCM) also known as methylene chloride, is a moderately polar (or weakly polar) aprotic solvent capable of dissolving nonpolar and moderately polar compounds. It is used for separating polar organic compounds, including alkaloids, and in liquid-liquid extractions.
Dichloromethane has two polar C–Cl bonds and an asymmetrical molecular structure. This creates a net dipole moment, giving the solvent moderate polarity.
Compared with strongly polar solvents (like water or DMF), its polarity is lower, making it more versatile.
