Why is 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) a better disinfectant than 99% isopropanol?
70% isopropyl alcohol IPA kills germs by dissolving their cell membranes. For instance, it effortlessly breaks down the thin protective layer of Gram-negative bacteria. This is why it is often referred to as pharmaceutical-grade alcohol.
Water is the secret to its effectiveness. It acts as an assistant, helping to break down the proteins in the germs' cell membranes. The 30% water content of 70% isopropyl alcohol enables the solution to fully penetrate the germs' cells. Once inside, it clumps all the proteins together, killing the germ completely.
Furthermore, 70% IPA evaporates more slowly than 99% isopropanol. This means it remains on surfaces for longer, giving it more time to combat germs.
Conversely, 99% isopropanol (almost pure alcohol) is too strong. It instantly clumps the proteins together on the surface of germs, forming a hard protective layer. This layer prevents the alcohol from entering the germ. The germ doesn't die; it just goes dormant and can still cause harm later.
Note that if the isopropyl alcohol IPA concentration drops below 50%, its disinfecting power drops sharply. Higher concentrations (such as 99%) are actually less effective at killing germs.
