What is Hafnium Carbide?

Hafnium Carbide is a compound of carbon and hafnium. With a melting point of about 3900°C, it is one of the most refractory binary compounds known. It has low oxidation resistance and oxidizes at temperatures as low as 430°C. HfC powder is a black, grayish powder with a low oxidation resistance.
HfC powder is a black, gray, brittle solid; absorbs thermal neutrons with a high cross-section; has a resistivity of 8.8 μohm-cm; and a hardness of 2300 kgf/mm2 and is used in nuclear reactor control rods.
It is prepared by heating HfO2 with oil fumes under H2 at 1900°C-2300°C. It is used in the form of crucibles. It is used in crucible form for melting oxides and other oxides.
