Primary Uses and Applications
Industrial and Commercial Dry Cleaning: This is the most well-known use of tetrachloroethylene. Perchloroethylene (PCE) is an excellent solvent for greases, oils, and fats without damaging fabrics, making it the dominant solvent in the dry-cleaning industry for decades.
Metal Degreasing: It is used as an industrial solvent to clean and degrease metal parts, often in vapor degreasing operations where its low flammability is a key advantage.
Chemical Intermediate: Tetrachloroethylene serves as a starting material (feedstock) in the synthesis of other chemicals, including hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) used as refrigerants.
Other Applications: Historically, it was used as a solvent in consumer products, a paint remover, and an anthelmintic (to treat parasitic worm infections) in humans. These uses have been largely phased out due to toxicity concerns.
