Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA), or 2-propanol, is a versatile solvent and chemical intermediate used across a wide range of industrial applications. It is a secondary alcohol produced primarily through the hydration of propylene-a petrochemical process that enables efficient, large-scale manufacturing.
IPA 99% (C3H8O) has a number of industrial applications. Commonly, it is used in paints & coatings, and as a cleaning solvent.
1. Paints & Coatings: Isopropyl Alcohol IPA is used as a diluent, holding the resin in suspension. It has a medium to slow rate of evaporation which lends itself well to this application.
2. Cleaning Solvent: Isopropanol effectively cleans off inks, adhesives, oils, gums, gasoline, grease, and etc. Sticky particles can be easily wiped away as they are brought into a solution. IPA leaves no film behind.
3. Extractant: IPA extracts oils from plant fiber.
4. Antiseptic Cleaner: 99% Isopropyl Alcohol IPA is used as an antiseptic cleaner in applications that require a non-toxic disinfectant. For example, if bleach were used in a greenhouse, the plants would be destroyed.
Safety & Handling
Isopropyl Alcohol 99% is a flammable liquid and vapor. Store in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, open flames, and hot surfaces. Keep container tightly closed when not in use. Ensure proper grounding and bonding during transfer to prevent static discharge.
PPE Requirements:
Wear protective gloves, eye protection, and face protection when handling. Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area to avoid breathing vapors. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for comprehensive handling instructions and emergency response procedures.
