Ivermectin Vs Levamisole Comparison

Oct 24, 2024 Leave a message

The choice of anthelmintic drug is critical in animal health management. Two widely used antiparasitic drugs, ivermectin and levamisole, are unique in their function and application, and veterinarians and farmers need to be aware of the key differences in their selection.

Functions and Indications

Ivermectin is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug widely used in the treatment of various internal and external parasites. It is effective against nematodes, lungworms, and ectoparasites such as mites and lice. Ivermectin works by causing paralysis of the parasite's nervous system, usually within 24 hours, and is indicated for a wide range of animals, including cattle, sheep, pigs and horses.

Levamisole is used primarily for the treatment of intestinal nematodes and is particularly effective against certain nematodes. It works by stimulating muscle contractions in the parasite, which causes it to be expelled from the body. Levamisole is commonly used in ruminants such as sheep and cattle to prevent and treat parasitic diseases caused by nematodes.

Safety and Side Effects:

Ivermectin: Safe in most animals, but there is a potential risk of toxicity in some breeds (e.g. Collies), so caution is needed.

Levamisole: caution is required in pregnant animals (especially in early pregnancy) and overdose may result in neurotoxicity.

Summary:

Ivermectin: broad-spectrum anthelmintic, targeting a wide range of parasites inside and outside the body, with a wider range of uses, but with a risk of toxicity.

Levamisole: mainly against internal nematodes, not effective against some parasites, but has an immune-enhancing effect.

Please consult your veterinarian before use to develop a deworming program suitable for your farm to ensure animal health.
