o-xylene for phthalic anhydride production
The most widespread industrial application of ortho-xylene is the production of phthalic anhydride via catalytic air oxidation, with the chemical reaction: C₈H₁₀ + 3O₂ → C₈H₄O₃ + 3H₂O.
This reaction is carried out at high temperatures using catalysts such as vanadium pentoxide. Ortho-xylene reacts with oxygen to produce phthalic anhydride; this highly efficient production method is commonly used by large petrochemical companies.
