Oxytetracycline: A Key Treatment For Various Ailments in Cattle

Feb 17, 2025 Leave a message

What is oxytetracycline used for in cattle?

One of the main uses of Oxytetracycline in cattle is to treat respiratory disease. Pneumonia, usually associated with bacteria such as Pasteurella spp. and Haemophilus spp. is a serious problem in cattle. Clinical trials have shown that, when administered at appropriate doses, Oxytetracycline helps to reduce the symptoms of these respiratory infections and promotes recovery.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, more commonly known as pink eye, is another ailment that oxytetracycline can address. Caused by Moraxella bovis, pink eye can cause discomfort, inflammation, and potential vision problems in cattle. Oxytetracycline treatment helps to combat the bacteria, reducing the severity of the infection and promoting the healing of the eyes.

Bacterial enteritis, or scours, is a common issue in calves, especially those caused by Escherichia coli. Oxytetracycline can be used to treat these gastrointestinal infections. By targeting the bacteria responsible for the diarrhea and associated symptoms, it helps calves regain their health and normal digestive function. In addition, it can also be used to treat foot rot and diphtheria caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, as well as wooden tongue caused by Actinobacillus lignieresii.

Precautions.

It is important to note that there are several precautions for the use of oxytetracycline in cattle.
The muscle may become discolored after administration, so the injection site and surrounding tissue may need to be trimmed during bandaging. Treatment must be stopped at least 28 days before cattle are slaughtered to avoid antibiotic residues in the meat. In addition, milk from treated animals must not be used as food during treatment and for 96 hours after the last treatment. Rapid intravenous administration can cause unconsciousness in animals, therefore, oxytetracycline should be administered slowly intravenously over a period of at least 5 minutes.
