CAS 106-42-3 p-Xylene, also known as 1,4-dimethylbenzene or para-xylene, is a colorless, flammable liquid aromatic hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C₈H₁₀ and a molecular weight of 106.16 g/mol. It is one of the three isomeric forms of xylene (alongside o-xylene and m-xylene) and serves primarily as a key feedstock in the chemical industry for producing terephthalic acid and dimethyl terephthalate, which are essential precursors to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) used in fibers, films, and plastic bottles. With a sweet odor and low solubility in water (0.165 g/L at 25°C), p-xylene is miscible in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and benzene.
