Methyl acetate is an acetate ester resulting from the formal condensation of acetic acid with methanol. A low-boiling colourless, flammable liquid, it is used as a solvent for many resins and oils. It has a role as a polar aprotic solvent, a fragrance and an EC 3.4. 19.3 inhibitor.

Uses
- Solvent: Methyl acetate is a quick-drying solvent for nitrocellulose, acetic acid fibre, honey amine resin, phenolic resin, and is also used as an extractant for fats and oils and plant components.
- Flavouring: Used in the manufacture of spices, can be used as a flavouring agent for wine to enhance the taste of fruits.
- Adhesive: Methyl acetate can be used as an adhesive for process purposes and also used in construction materials.
- Chemical synthesis intermediates: Important raw materials for the preparation of chemical substances such as acetic anhydride, acetamide and phenylacetone.
