Dimethyl sulfate is an organic compound which is a colourless or light yellow transparent liquid with a slight oniony odour. It is slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, dioxane, acetone and aromatic hydrocarbons, insoluble in carbon disulphide and aliphatic hydrocarbons. It is slowly hydrolysed in contact with water to produce sulphuric acid and methanol. Under alkaline conditions, the hydrolysis speeds up.
