Sodium formate is a white crystalline powder with slight hygroscopicity. It is odourless or slightly formic acid odour, soluble in water, its aqueous solution is alkaline, insoluble in ether.It has the general properties of a salt and decomposes into sodium carbonate and hydrogen when heated above 360°C. It reacts with strong acids to produce formic acid and the corresponding salts. It can react with strong acids to form formic acid and the corresponding salt.

Uses
- Leather industry: used in the dehairing and softening treatment of leather, improve the quality and durability of leather.
- Textile industry: as a reducing agent, sodium formate is used in the dyeing process of reducing dyes to improve the dyeing effect. Meanwhile, it can also be used in the bleaching and dechlorination treatment of fabrics to prevent fabrics from being damaged.
- Chemical raw material: it is an important raw material for the production of formic acid, oxalic acid and other chemical products.
- Other fields: used as buffer in electroplating industry to stabilise the pH value of plating solution and improve the quality of plating. In the paper industry, it can be used in the treatment of paper to improve the performance of paper. In food industry, sodium formate can be used as preservative to extend the shelf life of food.
