2-Methyl-1-propanol also known as Isobutyl alcohol(IBA) ,iso butanol, is a colorless, oily solvent with a sweet whiskey taste but a wine-like, unpleasant odor. As a class IC flammable liquid, isobutyl alcohol has a flashpoint at or above 73°F and below 100°F. It acts as a midway for synthetic resins and is a product of fermentation.
Application of 2-Methyl-1-propanol in organic synthesis
- As a reaction solvent: 2-Methyl-1-propanol can dissolve a variety of organic compounds and some inorganic compounds, providing a homogeneous reaction medium for many organic reactions.
- As raw material to synthesize other organic substances: Isobutanol can be used to synthesize ester compounds such as isobutyl acetate, diisobutyl phthalate, etc. These esters are widely used in the industries of coatings, plastics, and spices. 2-Methyl-1-propanol can also be used to synthesize a variety of other organic compounds, such as isobutyraldehyde, isobutyric acid, isobutylamine, etc. through oxidation, reduction, substitution and other reactions.
