Propylene Glycol (1,2-Propanediol, PG) is a colorless, odorless, and slightly viscous liquid with excellent solubility in water and organic solvents. Food-grade PG meets USP (United States Pharmacopeia), FCC (Food Chemicals Codex), or E1520 (EU food additive) standards, ensuring its safety for consumption.
Applications of Food Grade Propylene Glycol
1.As an Emulsifier: Propylene Glycol reacts with fatty acids to form propylene glycol fatty acid esters, which are important food emulsifiers.
2.As a Solvent: PG is a great solvent for food seasonings, pigments, preservatives, and natural extracts.
3.As a Moisturizer and Softener: 1,2-Propanediol has strong hygroscopicity and can retain moisture in food, keeping food such as bread, cakes and candies soft and preventing them from drying out and hardening, thereby prolonging their shelf life.
4.As a Stabilizer and Thickener: In some food products like jellies and puddings, propylene glycol can increase the viscosity of the system.
