Acrylonitrile is an organic compound. It is a colorless, volatile liquid. It has a pungent odor of garlic or onions. Its molecular structure consists of a vinyl group linked to a nitrile. It is widely used in industry to produce rubber, resins, plastics, elastomers, and synthetic fibers and to manufacture carbon fibers used in aircraft, defense, and aerospace industries.
Applications of ：
- Synthetic Fibre: Acrylonitrile is the main raw material for the manufacture of polyacrylonitrile fibre (acrylic). Acrylic has properties similar to wool and is widely used in the textile industry.
- Synthetic rubber: It can be copolymerised with butadiene to produce nitrile rubber.
- Plastic: Acrylonitrile is copolymerised with styrene, butadiene and other monomers to form engineering plastics such as ABS resin.
