Paraxylene is a colourless transparent liquid at room temperature, colourless flaky or prismatic crystals at low temperature, with aromatic odour. It is miscible with organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene, etc. It is soluble in chloroform, and heated decomposition emits pungent fumes and irritating smoke, and decomposition at high temperature produces dangerous carbon oxides.

Uses
- Production of polyester materials: More than 99% of paraxylene is used in the production of purified terephthalic acid (PTA).
- Preparation of poly paraxylene: Poly paraxylene can be made into thin film structure, is a new type of polymer material, widely used in electronics, optics, aviation, medicine, defence and other fields.
