Uses
- Solvent: n-pentane dissolves oils, fats, waxes, resins and rubber, and is used in laboratory and industrial solvent applications where its volatility is an advantage.
- Fuel blending component: as a light hydrocarbon, pentane can be blended into gasoline. Note that n-pentane has a low octane number (research octane number about 62), so blending it into gasoline lowers the octane rating rather than raising it; high-octane blending normally uses iso-octane or other high-octane components. Any gasoline-blending use must be evaluated against the target octane specification.
- Chemical intermediate: n-pentane can be converted into other compounds such as isoprene (by dehydrogenation), which is used to make synthetic rubber; it is also the feedstock for pentane-based solvent and blowing-agent products.

- GHS hazard classification: flammable liquid, category 1 (H224).
- Flash point ≈ -49°C; its vapour forms explosive mixtures with air over a wide range.
- UN 1265 (Pentanes) - transport under dangerous-goods rules; vapour is heavier than air and may travel to distant ignition sources.
- Store in a cool, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources and oxidizers; bond and ground containers during transfer; use explosion-proof equipment.
- High vapour concentrations cause narcosis; provide ventilation and use appropriate respiratory protection.
- Always consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before use, storage or transport.
