The dominant industrial production method is the vapor-phase reaction of ethylene, acetic acid, and oxygen over a noble metal catalyst (like palladium and gold on a support).
Simplified Reaction:
CH₂=CH₂ (Ethylene) + CH₃COOH (Acetic Acid) + ½ O₂ (Oxygen) → CH₃COOCH=CH₂ (Vinyl Acetate) + H₂O (Water)
This process is known as the ethylene method or Monsanto/Bayer process and accounts for most global production. An older method (the acetylene method) reacted acetylene with acetic acid.
