Tetrachloroethene, also known as perchloroethene or PCE/PERC is a colourless liquid industrial chemical that is widely used for dry cleaning fabrics and for metal cleaning. It is also used to make other chemicals and is used in some consumer products.
How toxic is perchloroethylene perc solvent?
perchloroethylene perc solvent is highly toxic, inhalation can rapidly cause central nervous system depression (dizziness, headache, unconsciousness). It is irritating to mucous membranes.
California declared perchloroethylene perc a toxic chemical in 1991, and its use will be illegal in the state by 2023. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified the PERC solvent as a hazardous air contaminant, and both the EPA and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have classified PERC as 'likely to be a human carcinogen'.
Due to these classifications, federal law requires dry cleaners to handle PERC solvent as hazardous waste and take special precautions against site contamination. Indeed, many landlords refuse to allow dry cleaning facilities in their buildings due to the potential danger to other tenants and the resulting remediation costs. Perc is such an effective solvent that, if exposed to the ground, it will penetrate concrete and soil until it reaches groundwater. In other words, perc is certainly not one of the safest dry cleaning chemicals.

Safety information
Avoid inhaling its vapours during use. Ensure good ventilation during operation by using dehumidifiers or exhaust systems to remove perchloroethylene perc from the air. Wear appropriate respiratory protective equipment, such as a gas mask or an air-supplied breathing apparatus.
Wear protective gloves, safety glasses or a face shield when handling tetrachloroethylene to avoid contact with your skin, eyes or other mucous membranes.
If ingested or inhaled, seek immediate medical attention and take the container or label with you to the hospital for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Tetrachloroethylene is toxic to aquatic life and should not be discharged into bodies of water to prevent environmental pollution. Waste and residues must be disposed of properly in accordance with local environmental regulations.
