Yes, absolutely. Paraxylene (p-Xylene) is a primary petrochemical. It is produced directly from naphtha or natural gas liquids via processes such as catalytic reforming. It sits at the base of a major derivative chain (PET), making it one of the most important petrochemicals in terms of volume.

What is Paraxylene used for?
Paraxylene is used in intermediate petrochemical plant as a raw material for PTA (Purified Terephthalic Acid). Currently, 65% of PTA is used to produce Polyester Fiber or Synthetic Fiber, which is used as a raw material for apparels such as clothing and fabric bag. Another 30% is used to produce PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) bottle, which is commonly used to contain water and soft drink. The last 5% of PTA is used in the production of various plastic products such as film, food container and etc.
How is para-xylene produced?
- p-Xylene is usually produced by the hydrocracking of xylene or the demethylation of xylene.
- Hydrocracking: Xylene reacts with hydrogen under the action of a catalyst to produce p-xylene and hydrogen.
- Demethylation reaction: Xylene reacts with a catalyst such as aluminum chloride to remove a methyl group, producing p-xylene.
