What is Polyisobutylene (PIB) polymer?
There are three categories of pib: low molecular weight pib, medium molecular weight pib and high molecular weight pib.
- Low molecular weight conventional and high reactive PIBs are transparent liquid polymers used as viscosity modifiers or plasticizers in a wide range of applications such as lubricants, adhesives and sealants, rubbers and plastics, cosmetic formulations, etc. Their main characteristics are molecular weight (ranging from 280 to 6.000) and kinematic viscosity (ranging from 2 to 40.000 cSt at 100ºC).
- Medium and high molecular weight PIBs are semi-solid to solid polymers that are used as additives or as the main ingredient in many formulations, including lubricants, adhesives and sealants, chewing gum, construction materials and electrical components. Their main characteristic is also their molecular weight, which ranges from 30.000 to 3.000.000 and is sometimes expressed in Staudinger's index, from 20 to 600 cm3/g.
