What is the difference between DEG and MEG?

In the realm of glycols, understanding the distinctions between Monoethylene Glycol (MEG), Diethylene Glycol (DEG) is crucial for various industrial applications. These glycols, while chemically related, have unique properties and applications that make them suitable for specific uses.

Chemical Structure and Basic Properties

Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) CAS 107-21-1

MEG, with the chemical formula C2H6O2, is the simplest form of glycol. It is a colorless, odorless, and viscous liquid with a sweet taste.

Key Properties of MEG:

Molecular Weight: 62.07 g/mol

Boiling Point: 197.3°C (387.1°F)

Freezing Point: -13°C (8.6°F)

Density: 1.113 g/cm³

Viscosity: 16.1 cP at 20°C

Diethylene Glycol (DEG) CAS 111-46-6

DEG, with the chemical formula C4H10O3, consists of two ethylene glycol molecules joined by an ether bond. This glycol is less volatile than MEG and has a higher boiling point and viscosity, making it suitable for different industrial uses.

Key Properties of DEG:

Molecular Weight: 106.12 g/mol

Boiling Point: 245°C (473°F)

Freezing Point: -10.45°C (13.19°F)

Density: 1.118 g/cm³

Viscosity: 35.7 cP at 20°C

Applications of MEG, DEG

Diethylene glycol is used as a solvent in various chemical processes and as a plasticizer to enhance the flexibility of polymers. It is also present in the manufacture of certain polyester resins. However, its application is somewhat limited due to toxicity issues.

Mono ethylene glycol is a major raw material in the production of PET resins used in the manufacture of beverage bottles, textile fibers and packaging films. It is also used in automotive antifreeze and coolants to effectively maintain optimal engine operating temperatures.
