1. High boiling point
Ethylene glycol/MEG has a boiling point of 197.3°C (387.1°F), much higher than water (100°C/212°F). This prevents the coolant from vaporising or in high temperature systems such as car engines, ensuring continuous liquid phase heat transfer.
2. Low freezing point
When mixed with water, MEG lowers the freezing point of the solution. For example, a 50:50 mixture (ethylene glycol:water) has a freezing point of -29°F (-34°C), while a 70:30 mixture has a freezing point of -76°F (-60°C). This prevents the coolant from freezing in cold environments and preventing ice expansion that could rupture engine blocks, radiators or pipes.
3. Outstanding Heat Capacity
Monoethylene glycol has a high specific heat capacity, although slightly lower than water. Nevertheless, ethylene glycol maintains a significant heat absorption capacity when mixed with water.
4. Chemical stability
Under normal operating conditions, ethylene glycol EG is chemically inert and will not degrade or react with metal surfaces in the cooling system (e.g. iron, aluminium, copper). This reduces the risk of corrosion or deposits and extends component life.
5. low viscosity
Ethylene glycol's relatively low viscosity makes it easy to flow through the narrow passages and pipes of cooling systems.
