Sodium hydroxide is white solid with strong hygroscopicity, easy to deliquesce, easily soluble in water and violently exothermic, aqueous solution is strongly alkaline. As a strong base, it can neutralise with acid, react with metal ions to produce hydroxide precipitate, and has strong corrosiveness to organic materials such as protein and grease.

Uses
- Industrial manufacturing: Sodium hydroxide is used to separate cellulose in the paper industry; also used in the production of various types of sodium salts, synthetic detergents and organic intermediates.
- Water treatment: Sodium hydroxide adjusts the pH value of wastewater and neutralises acidic substances; it reacts with heavy metal ions to produce precipitation.
- Food processing: It is used as acidity regulator in cocoa bean processing and beverage production; used to enhance paper strength in food wrapping paper processing.
- Surface treatment: Caustic soda flake is used in metal degreasing and cleaning to remove surface oil; used in aluminium etching to control the precision of surface treatment.
