The primary use of m-xylene is as a raw material for the production of isophthalic acid (IPA).
m-xylene is oxidized to produce isophthalic acid. IPA is a key monomer in PET, unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), and alkyd resins.
Solvent: Similar to mixed xylenes, m-xylene can be used as a solvent in paints, varnishes, inks, and adhesives. However, due to cost reasons, its use as a pure solvent is less common than its use in mixtures of xylene isomers.
Chemical Intermediate: Used in the synthesis of other chemicals, such as isophthalonitrile.
