CAS 108-38-3 M-xylene, also known as 1,3-xylene; m-dimethylbenzene, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C8H10. It is a colourless, transparent liquid with a toluene-like odour. It is insoluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents, such as ethanol, ether and chloroform.
There are three isomers of xylene: o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene. The industrial product is a mixture of these three isomers in the following proportions: o-xylene (10%), m-xylene (70%) and p-xylene (20%).
m-Xylene Application
1. meta-xylene is used in pharmaceutical, fragrance, and dye intermediate materials and color film oil-soluble color formers. Also used as a raw material for the production of isophthalic acid. However, compared with the ortho- and para-isomers, the amount is less, so it is often converted to other isomers by isomerization.
2. For the production of isophthalic acid, m-methyl benzoic acid, isophthalonitrile, and the like.
