How is Benzoic Acid Made?
Benzoic acid is produced commercially by partial oxidation of toluene with oxygen. The process is catalyzed by cobalt or manganese naphthenates.
What is benzoic acid mainly used for?
Medical
Due to its antifungal properties, benzoic acid is an important ingredient in antifungal creams and ointments for treating conditions such as ringworm and athlete's foot. Some even cite its use in the treatment of gout. It is also used in topical antiseptics and hospital-grade antibiotic, antimicrobial and antifungal cleaning products.
Cosmetic
Benzoic acid is a component of many toothpastes and mouthwashes. It is also found in medicated face washes and creams. In makeup products such as lipstick, benzoic acid helps stabilise and maintain the product's pH.
Food
